As for the dark, well, children often feel that monsters under the bed or the boogeyman might get them in the dark. Adults can have that instinctual fear as well, of monsters in the dark, especially if one reads lots of horror literature or watches too many scary movies. Or there's also the fear of serial killers hiding in the closet waiting for the lights to go out."
