Laurent's heart lurched painfully. Gansey had betrayed him, and was leading
someone to his sanctuary. He trembled where he stood, forcing himself to
stay still and quiet despite the rage and despair pouring through him.
They passed by him in the corridor, going the wrong way. Laurent couldn't
make sense of it. Gansey was lost? The fool.
Moving silently and at a safe distance, Laurent trailed after them as they
moved downward, listening. Persians? Mummies?
All at once, Laurent understood. Gansey wasn't leading this man to the
lair, he was attempting to lead him astray.
Pulling a blade from his boot, Laurent stepped forward, pressing the icy
edge of it to the stranger's throat. "If you hurt him, you die," he said, a
soft rasp in this intruder's ear.
