A warning flashed in Damen's head: tread lightly. Laurent's wariness reminded him of nothing so much as a hunted deer, skittish and startling at every forest crackle. He touched Laurent's face, very gently.

Damen kept the rest of his weight off of the man beneath him; rose back up; the contact was broken again, but he stayed close enough above him that a single tug of Laurent's arms or legs could bring him back down again.
