Laurent read for over an hour, pausing occasionally to drink his coffee or to nibble at one of the pastries. When his voice grew tired, he finally marked the page and set the book aside, rising to his feet. He'd discharged his duty, at least for the time being. He would return tomorrow morning to continue reading. Until then, he wanted a walk and freedom.
