Adam reached out without looking, missed, and grabbed Alec’s phone on the
second try. Not to take it from him, but just to prevent him from making
the call. It meant a lot to him to hear that he mattered to Alec, and that
was enough to get him to keep trying.
“I need you to try to let it matter to me,” Adam said, shoulders still
shaking as he tried to regain control of himself. “Compromise is hard for
me. I’ve been beaten bloody plenty of times for not yielding my pride. I’m
trying. This is the compromise I need from you. If I ask you what you want,
or what you’re feeling, I need you to try to give me an answer other than
‘it doesn’t matter’.”
He had some idea of how difficult his request would be, but as long as he
knew Alec was trying for him, Adam was ready to keep trying in return.
“Please,” he murmured, having to choke out that word.
